Curatorial note:

'The IIC was conceived to provide the ideal ambience for exemplars various cultures to stay together for a while, in order that the sharpness of intellectual exchange is softened by the graciousness of good fellowship,' founding Director Dr. C. D. Deshmukh.

The India International Centre was commissioned in an era of institution building in India. It was a time of the post-independence era in India, one in which India was making her mark in the world, in an era of post- independence optimism.  In the prevalent milieu of artistic vibrancy, architects like Le Corbusier, Louis Kahn and Charles Correa were invited by Pandit Nehru to lay the seeds of a new architectural concept. Joseph Stein was one such architect who was invited to lead the team which would translate the idea of IIC into an architectural masterpiece.

For the Golden Jubilee Exhibition, the curatorial approach celebrates the ethos with which IIC was established. The Exhibition focuses on the people who were the soul of the Centre, and the architecture that created the humane and personal setting for it. The design will bring to life the spirit of IIC through its architecture that is based on relationships of space and form, the garden and building. The Exhibition titled ‘Form & Spirit, IIC at 50’, we hope will give the visitor an immersive experience of IIC in its initial years.
