The Crafted Tree
The Crafted Tree
An installation of folk representation of birds, and other animals
By artisans of Dastkar
Lighting of lamp by Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan, Life Trustee IIC and Chairperson, IIC- Asia Project
Venue: Quadrangle Garden
Craft and Nature have always been interlinked, with craftspeople using produce from the fields and forest as raw material, while local flora and fauna provide imagery and design inspiration.
The DASTKAR Crafted Tree will inhabit the much loved tree in the IIC central courtyard with birds and animals from all over India, using materials and craft techniques traditional to each area and skill.
There will be painted lacquer birds and animals in the patachitra tradition of Orissa, and large sized papier mache tigers, monkeys and elephants made by the NAIKA theatre craft artistes beloved of Kamaladevi Chattopadhyaya. Beautiful hanging birds nests from Chhatisgarh made from decoratively cutworked gourds vie with terracotta hanging bird mobiles from Orissa, and coir monkeys leap from intricately coiled bunches of leaves and fruit, while colourful blockprinted and stuffed patchwork birds from Rajasthan, contrast with burnt wood birds from Delhi.
All items will be available for sale post- the Festival.
