Sant Tukaram (Marathi)
(130 min; 1936; dvd; English subtitles)
Directors: V. Damle & S. Fattelal

Considered one of the greatest Indian films, Sant Tukaram is based on the beloved 19th century Saint poet of Maharashtra who took the Bhakti movement to new heights. The film delves into the different facets of Tukaram’s life and journey towards sainthood.

Sant Tukaram transcended cultural, geographical and linguistic barriers with its depiction of the importance of one’s Dharma towards the community and nation. It is a rare film in its treatment of the abhangs (devotional songs) of Tukaram. The deftness in using musical forms to introduce and develop characters and further the plot set it apart, making it the archetype for other such devotional films of the time
